Obsessive Attachment to Former Lover: A series of video segments spanning ten sessions shows the full methodology of Depth-Oriented Brief Therapy (DOBT). A female client describes two years of painful, obsessive attachment to a former lover. At the tenth session she reports a full release from this symptom. The videos are accompanied by a complete transcript with numerous commentaries. The therapist is Bruce Ecker, LMFT, co-originator of DOBT. The relation between personality disorder (PD) symptoms, depression, and interpersonal stress were examined over 6 months in a sample of 143 adolescents from a low-income urban high school. Both self report questionnaires in the full sample and structured interviews in a subset of 54 girls indicated the following: PD symptoms predicted greater depressive symptoms and interpersonal stress over time; PD symptoms were highly stable; depressive symptoms did not predict change in PD symptoms over time. Moreover, an integrative model was supported, wherein the route by which PD symptoms led to greater depression was via the generation of interpersonal stress. These results suggest that adolescents’ PD symptoms play a destructive role in the construction of interpersonal circumstances during a key period for depression onset.

A Contemporary View of Some of Joseph Sandler’s Key Concepts (Holder, 3 CE Credits): Three of Sandler’s seminal papers—“The Background of Safety” (1960a), “The Concept of the Representational World” (1962), and “Countertransference and Role Responsiveness” (1976)—are scrutinized and discussed to explore the evolution of his thinking over some 40 years. His early insistence on the importance of feeling states and intrapsychic mechanisms and processes, especially those relating to internal objects and internal object relationships, are emphasized as well as the interactions and complementary relationship between theoretical formulations and clinical findings, as exemplified in his research activities in the Index Department of the Anna Freud Centre in London and in his paper on countertransference and role responsiveness. Interrelationships with other concepts, both clinical and theoretical, show up in Sandler’s work as well as that of other eminent authors up to the present time, and similarities in conceptualizations are highlighted.
